I use the 4 litre Really Useful Boxes to store all of my Warhammer models. Until now, I’ve always used to use the magnet method. I’d super-glue a few magnets to the bottom of the model base, and then using glued magnet sheets in the box. Volia, my models would securely stay put in the box.

It worked, but there were quite a few problems:

  • It took ages – a minute or two a model to glue them at least
  • I’d get covered in glue if a magnet slipped
  • Magnets would often break the bonds of the glue when drying and stick to each other, so sometimes I’d glue one magnet, wait for it to dry, and then glue another
  • Using only one magnet wasn’t strong enough
  • Magnets weren’t cheap
  • Magnets would often slip and close on my fingers – ouch!
  • The super-glue would leave a white residue, which could get onto your models
  • The super-glue wouldn’t always hold the magnets enough, even if I scraped the bottom of the base to improve grip
  • I’d often pick a model up and find the magnets left behind in the box

Honestly, it was a faff.

I also tried regular sticky magnets, but they were thinner than the separate magnets and that meant there was always a gap between the magnet and the magnet sheet in the really useful box. So they then weren’t the most secure and would often slip around or fall over. They were also designed to go at the bottom of the base (around the edge), but that raised the model up. I didn’t like it, so I went back to super gluing magnets again.

But then I found that there’s a ‘Premium’ sticky magnet just for model bases, from WarMag. It has a foam insert that raises the total height of the stick magnet, and that means there’s no space between the magnet on the model and the magnet sheet in the box. It’s a perfect hold every time.

Just before typing this, I’ve just removed the old magnets super-glued to the bottom of my Vespid Kill Team, which didn’t take much effort with a pair of plyers at all. Then it took less than 90 seconds to fit the premiums sticky magnets and I’m done. Worth every penny.

They save me time, work incredibly well, and add a nice bit of heft to the model so they don’t fall over during a game either. Price seems high at first, but I find them to be good value. It’s best to get a few sets to save on postage (£5.95, which takes a week), but there’s little doubt you’ll use them up.
