If you’re going to be running the North Downs Way 50 or 100, this is a great route to get to know much of the first section to and including Box Hill. Even if you’re not running those events, this is a hearty and thoroughly enjoyable there and back route.

Download the route from Garmin, or Strava.

Why do I recommend this route?

I’ve run this route 3 times or so, plus the 12 times in Centurion events, and expect to use it as a standard training marathon for years to come.

  • There are parking options at either end, and even in the middle so you can mix it up
  • It’s easy to follow
  • It’s an out and back, so you can easily extend it (or shorten it)
  • The trail conditions are generally good
  • There are a few (cold) water-stops along the way (and again on the way back)
  • There are also a few places to stop for food – the caravan in the car park a few miles before Box Hill does offer tasty cake and ice cold soft drinks – bliss!
  • There are plenty of roads in case you jack it in and get an Uber or friend to pick you up
  • If you run any events along the North Downs Way, this is a great recce run
  • 95% of the route is on trail

Options for parking

Chantries Car Park

I park in the National Trust car park near Guildford. You need to be aware that they now only allow you to park for up-to 4 hours, so you either need a fast marathon pace, reduce your distance or to not park there. You can park just around the corner from there, but I’m unsure what the parking arrangements are.

Newlands Corner

If you want to park in the middle West of this route, then Newlands Corner is a good bet. Toilets, water, lots of parking and a good café with hot and cold options.

Coombes

If you want to park near enough in the middle (ish), then Coombes is a good spot, but it’s a small car park.

Box Hill

If you’re coming from Box Hill, then you can park in the National Trust car park at the Fort. There are toilets and a nice café there, but there are also 222 steps to go through.

Hope this helps.
